Locks:
Marcus Peters
Jakorian Bennett
Peters is the CB that this staff has been asking for. Dude is a ball hawk. Numerous times this off-season JMD has said he wants guys that get their hands on the ball. Peters does, and does that a lot in his career. Bennett is a fourth round selection, that was getting first team reps in OTAs. Both these guys are making the roster.
Would be shocked if cut, but it’s not impossible:
Duke Shelley
Nate Hobbs
Before we all get up in arms about Hobbs, I am not saying I think he gets cut, not one bit. But I can see a world, an odd world, but a world it happens. Hobbs struggled last year and wasn’t a selection by this staff. But more than likely he will be a starter but if he has a god awful, just down right awful camp, I could see it. Shelley was signed this off-season under the perception he would be a starter, or see heavy minutes, and that will more than likely be the case. But like Hobbs, if his camp is downright bad I could see them thinking that last year on Minnesota was just an anomaly. Still doubt it happens.
The Real Battlers:
Brandon Faycson
Taylor Hall
David Long Jr
Amik Robertson
Sam Webb
Last year they opened the season with 5 corners. If that’s the case here you are looking at 5 guys battling for 1 spot. Just looking at all of them, David Long seems like the biggest long shot. He was an off-season signing but it wasn’t an all inspiring signing at the time and if you look at what online talking heads are saying, his tape stinks. But what Long does have going for him is his 4 career ints, that the most of this group. Amik Robertson has never lived up the draft position and the excitement around the pick at the time. But the man has just continued year over year to prove the doubters wrong and make the roster. With all that said the man did make plays last season, granted 90% of them came in one game. But he’s been a cockroach.
Brandon Faycson is back for another stint with the raiders. The catch with Facyson is he is better suited to play zone coverage which isn’t what this team will run a majority of the time, see Marcus Peters and Jakorian Bennett for reference. But Faycson has been a starter in the NFL at times, but consistently has been on a roster. If we play more zone in 2023 then I like him on this roster way more.
Tyler Hall and Sam Webb, high ceiling guys. Hall played sparingly in 2023 but he made a noticeable impact when on the field. When he played you kept an eye on 37. With that said, that was the only good football he’s played in his career. If he has a good camp though I think it’d be hard to not bring him on the 53 man. Sam Webb is similar(ish) to Tyler Hall. Webb is a high ceiling guy, and a surprise roster guy last year. Sam Webb had a roller coaster rookie season, playing well and poorly at times. Webb was rostered for all 17 games in 2023 and started 3 times. In all honesty I have no idea who makes the roster from this group. I would guess that they carry 6 CBs in week 1, even though last year it was only 5. One thing that can be said, all these guys made starts in 2023, so even though they’re not the big names, they’re still good depth. Let the best man win.
Practice Squad Hopefuls:
Jordan Perryman
Azizi Hearns
Bryce Cosby
Not impossible for them to make the roster, see Sam Webb in 2022. But at best these guys would be happy making practice squad.
