New details have emerged surrounding the Las Vegas Raiders veteran quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo. Per, Pro Football Talk has reported that they have obtained a copy of Garoppolo’s contract with the Raiders. The contract contains a critical financial element – Addendum G – which addresses the foot injury Garoppolo suffered back in the 2022 season with the 49ers.
The addendum is a waiver and release used in various forms of contracts. This must have been introduced when Jimmy G came to the Raiders facility for his introductory press conference, which was pushed back the following day. The Office revealed that it was something due to the contract they wanted to clear up. Already under the assumption that Garoppolo was near enough to participate in the Raider’s offseason training program, there was a setback. The only reason Garoppolo didn’t pass his physical was because his foot had not healed properly. Jimmy underwent surgery on his foot to correct the previous procedure. After signing with the Raiders, this is where Dave Ziegler implemented the Addendum G policy on Garoppolo’s contract.
Jimmy Garoppolo went over the conditions of his contract offer along with the Addendum G added to it. He acknowledged that and waived the risk of further injury by continuing his career. The waiver states that ”continuing to play professional football may result in deterioration, aggravation, or re-injury of the existing conditions rendering Player physically unable to perform the services that would be required of Player by an NFL Player Contract.”Garoppolo agreed to waive all claims against the Raiders, the league, or anyone responsible for anything related to the condition. Therefore, he has agreed that any disputes regarding any injury to the waiver specified will be resolved by the team’s physician. The contract includes one more significant role that could lopsided his future as a Raider.
Since Addudem G applies to all of these conditions that Garoppolo agreed to, it leaves this agreement as well. The Raiders can terminate Jimmy G at any time if he violates anything related to the waiver. The waiver can be voided if he is successful in accomplishing these three steps: Garopolo must pass his physical exam, he must be active for one game during the 2023 season, and can not injure the same foot he previously did last year that the Addudem G stated.
The Raiders originally negotiated a contract that would give Garoppolo a base salary of $11.25M, including a signing bonus of $11.25M for 2023. However, the foot injury stripped him of his signing bonus with the full $22.5 million becoming his base salary this year.
He will not receive any of it until he can pass his physical. In the meantime, the Raiders can cut him at any time if it goes against the Addendum G agreement. The Raiders may not see Jimmy G suit up in the Silver and Black, maybe not even paying him a single cent of his contract. There’s a lot to think about the Raiders quarterback position moving forward with or without Jimmy Garoppolo.
