THE END OF THE RENFROW ERA?

THE END OF THE RENFROW ERA?

In the mists of cleaning house this offseason in the Raiders organization. After cutting a 10-year veteran quarterback Derek Carr, trading away their star tight end Darren Waller, and letting a very productive linebacker named Denzel Perryman test free agency. Raider fans are accepting the reality that the team is moving in a different direction by building a “winning culture”. Now it brings many to believe that the Raiders are potentially getting ready to move on their Pro Bowl wide receiver, Hunter Renfrow.

Hondo Carpenter of SI.com, is known as a writer for the Las Vegas Raiders. Believes that Hunter Renfrow will NOT be a Raider this season. This was reported by @_MLFootball on Twitter, an independent NFL reporter. In his brief tweet, Hondo also said “I expect something to happen after June 1st.” Now everything is starting to boil down in the pot as to if the Raiders will keep Renfrow or not. In this situation, it’s an open door. There are reasons you can simply point out if Renfrow will not be here in 2023.

What we can take away from this offseason and how it translated heading into free agency, there’s a lot to question. Josh McDaniels incorporated familiarity into this newly redesigned offense. It would only make sense why there are so many former Patriots being signed onto the Raiders roster this year. There are reasons to assume that this playbook is far more complex than it seems. Bringing in Jimmy Garapollo as bridge quarterback was the start of the restoration process. Centering him as a base piece to mold Mcdaniel’s plan to envision his style of offense with pieces he’s groomed back in New England. As for the receivers, they provide a different story at bay.

Newcomers in Las Vegas include the names of Jakobi Meyers, Phillip Dorsett, Cam Sims, Deandre Carter, Kristian Wilkerson, a re-signed Keelan Cole, and a drafted wide receiver from Cincinnati, Tre Tucker. We all know Davante Adams is here to stay for the remainder of his 5-year, $140M contract. Jakobi Meyers is locked in to be a projected WR2 or WR3 with him being a slot wideout. Meyers signed a 3-year, $33M contract, except for him to be here for some time. Ideally, Renfrow is a WR3 that holds a purpose at that slot role. It’s clear that he isn’t a return man or has the intangibles for a special team role he’s carried for a couple of seasons. Tre Tucker and Deandre Carter are suitable special teams additions for the return position. It will be a very competitive wide receiver room at training camp. I don’t see Renfrow taking a WR4 role, so he either stays to compete for his spot or gets traded before then. His contract is another obstacle that the Raiders need to address as well.

Hunter Renfrow signed an extension in June of last year. His extension is a 2-year, $32M contract with $21M guaranteed. Renfrow won’t be a free agent until 2025. The best way to approach this situation if the Raiders are wanting to get out of his contract would be to aim after a trade (post-June 1st). According to overthecap.com, Hunter Renfrow’s contract details show that if the Raiders trade him after June 1st they would be taking a dead cap of $1,836,000 and initially save $11,290,000 out of his $13,126,000 for 2023. Trading him now would result in a crucial dead cap of $7,344,000 along with a minimum $5,782,000 cap savings. So it is likely the Raiders will take this chance & seek a trade next month. Would it be for draft picks? More likely, it would be for a positional need the Raiders need to go grab.

After everything you can look at in this situation, the Raiders are in a position to get themselves a player in a trade that will send Renfrow away. After addressing the contract details, you can see the team needs defense still. Linebacker being the best possible need in this since the room is thin with no depth. There is no need to go after any other offensive acquisitions, it would be a costly mistake. The offense is loaded with truck loaded of receivers. The O-line performed a solid rate last year, there’s enough depth. The tight end room no question looks secure with Hooper, Mayer & Howard. As for the defense, with Robert Spillane, Luke Masterson and a not ideal starter Divine Deablo is a concern. Amari Burney, one of the Raiders draft picks is mostly a depth piece at best. The Raiders may also sign a veteran cornerback, Marcus Peters is still up in the air after his visit to the facility earlier this week. Defense is a must for a Renfrow trade.

We will find out what the Raiders can do moving forward about this situation. The rumors are boiling to the point its believable that Las Vegas will lose another productive player & a dependable target. As for the state of the Raiders, it is the start of a new rebuild that the organization has never seen before. The potential of this rebuild has a lot of work to do in order to create the “winning culture” Raiders general manager Dave Ziegler has empathized in the past. It’s a long road ahead of the new era in the 2023 season.
